Teaching Approach
My main focus is to develop good vocal habits among my students and have fun
while learning. All too often, people have been seen appearing in a number of TV
shows saying that they have been receiving singing lessons. It is unfortunate that
some people spend their money seeking instruction from those who are not qualified
nor skilled to do so. I am an experienced, qualified teacher who offers very relaxed
and informative classes where the students actually learn the skills of good singing.
I started studying the piano from the age of 8 and progressed through all the
Associated Board exams, Grades I to VIII by the age of 14. I was a regular
competition pianist and won the Berkshire Conservatoire Trophy for the most
outstanding young pianist in 1979.
I read a BA (Hons) degree in music at UEA, Norwich. I continued singing studies at
the Royal Academy of Music under the renowned opera baritone, Derek
Hammond-Stroud, O.B.E. I qualified with the GRAM (performers diploma) as well as
the LRAM (singing teachers diploma).
My professional singing started with contracts at London Voices as a classical
company session singer and, with them, made numerous recordings of Verdi operas
at EMI Studios, BBC Proms appearances including Proms-In-The-Park, London, with
Andrea Boccelli and several film soundtracks including Star Wars, Harry Potter and
Lord of the Rings as well as cruise ship contracts.
I now teach singing to complete beginners as well as advanced level (Grade VIII and
music college entry). It is my aim to share and pass on my knowledge, skill and love
of this art. I specialise in classical, musical theatre as well as pop and jazz/swing
repertoires. Apart from adhering to aspects of Bel Canto and good Italian vocal
exercises, I encourage my students to bring their own choice of songs to the lessons.
Being a competent pianist allows me to be able to coach students properly in their
song interpretations.
